Slavicin and Brumov-Bylnice Czech Republic

The target region is located in the south-east part of the Zlin Region (east part of the Czech Republic). The east and south borders of selected region (bold black line) are identical with Czech-Slovak boundary (purple line). Target region consists of two town districts (Brumov-Bylnice and Slavicin) with two towns and eleven villages.  Approximately 21 000 inhabitants live in the area of 206.5 km². Slavicin (6 900 inhabitants) and Brumov-Bylnice (5 900 inhabitants) are the biggest settlements and natural centres of selected area. Most of the population lives in valleys of two small rivers called Vlara and Brumovka. The White Carpathians with peaks Javornik (782 m) and Pruklesy (835 m) are dominant part of target region. Slavicin district includes municipalities Slavičín, Bohuslavice nad Vláří, Lipová, Petrůvka, Rudimov and Šanov. Brumov – Bylnice district includes municipalities Brumov – Bylnice, Jestřabí, Návojná, Nedašov, Nedašova Lhota, Rokytnice and Štítná nad Vláří-Popov. Woods covering a half of the region area surround the settlements thus the wood supply distances will be short. Agricultural land is mostly composed of grassland or orchards and is a potential source of waste biomass. Wood-processing industry represents important potential partner of this project. Local economy is quiet apportioned and any sector (Agriculture, Industry, Building, Transport, Public sector,…) takes more than 24% of local economics activities.

From energy point of view, the most important players are housing (mainly heating) with 56% of total energy consumption, tercial sphere (heating of public buildings) with 30% and industry with 9%. According to The Territorial Energy conception of the Zlín region (2001), most of consumed energy comes from natural gas (42%) electricity (37%) and solid fuels (21%). Solid fuels are a mixture of fossil fuels and wood. Fortunately the share of biomass is rising, but effective professional biomass market has not been established yet. There is no big power plant located in the target region and most of the electricity is imported from other parts of the Czech Republic. Electricity is produced in small renewable energy sources (hydro, photovoltaic) or in cogeneration units using natural gas for supplying district heating system in Slavicin. There have been three important projects realized on biomass utilization in the region so far. All of them are high capacity boiler room for heat production utilizing sawdust and woodchips. First project is a boiler room in private company Javorník-Plus,s.r.o. which could combust straw as well. The boiler has heat output of 0.8 MW and was installed in 2003. Second project is a boiler room for district heating system in the part of Slavicin with heat output of 1.6 MW installed in 2003. Nowadays, the Slavicin municipality is planning increasing of biomass using for heating in the main part of town district heating system. The last project is reconstruction of old boiler room of Brumov-Bylnice district heating system in 2009. This unit with combined installed heat output of 3 MW represents the biggest biomass equipment in target region. However, Brumov-Bylnice municipality support further increases in biomass use.
